Pizza Station

Pizza Station opened up in Connell on May 19, 2000 by local owners Lee & Vicki Barrow. Lee had always wished there was a pizza place in town when he was in high school and ever since then had the idea to open a place of his own. Since they opened, they have served great tasting pizza, salad, ice cream, hot wings, pop and 10 different micro brews that rotate out. Pizza Station has a great lunch buffet that runs from 11:30-2pm daily. They also have a small arcade in the back to enjoy while waiting for your pizza. Pizza Station has 1 full time and 4 part-time employees.

Prior to being Pizza Station, the location was formally a Napa Auto Parts, a floral shop, a motor cycle shop and also a 2nd hand store. Barrows wanted to offer another food option for the community and visitors to enjoy and serve amazing tasting pizza. Vicki said “this was like my youngest baby, it took us 9 months from the time we bought it to opening day and now it’s 18 years old! I come here every day and work because unlike an 18-year-old child, I still have to take care of it.”

Both Lee & Vicki are CHS graduates of 1985. When they first bought the building and were in the process of opening Pizza Station the railroad theme was not the original idea. But over the months of remodeling and preparing for opening day, the front windows had no glass and when the trains came through and blew their horn it was so loud. They quickly learned to embrace the train and the sound of the horn. Most of the memorabilia has been donated by the community of Connell and have some pieces from Mesa, too. They even have a pizza named with the train theme – “The DeRailer”- an all meat pizza topped with bacon!

Pizza Station is great supporters of community events – they are fall festival sponsors and also attend the annual Harvest Festival (formally wine & brew) in November as drink/food vendors.

City of Connell

The City was established in 1883 as a railroad stop that was called Palouse Junction. Later it became known as Connell, named after a Northern Pacific Station Agent, Joseph Connell. The City was officially incorporated in 1910.

The City of Connell serves the community offering many services; park facilities, water, sewer, contracted sanitation, Fire Department, Police Department, building permits, community center rental/usage, and dog license. If you visit City Hall you can get many services fulfilled there and also get general information about the City of Connell as well as the community.

The City of Connell has 22 permanent employees, 13 seasonal employees and 27 firemen. Their main goal is to keep the community safe. They have rapid response by well trained first responders and keep well maintained infrastructure. They are proactive in the maintenance of water, sewer and street systems. It is also understood that it is important to be financially stable, so that they can protect and enhance the City’s financial health and stability while maintaining appropriate and essential public services in a cost-effective manner.

The Police Department offers bicycle registrations – this helps in returning lost or stolen bikes that have been recovered. They also offer House Checks for residents when they are on vacation or out of town.

A bit of history….the first City Council meeting was held on December 13th, 1910 where W.H. Miller was appointed as the 1st mayor of the Town of Connell. Our current mayor is Lee Barrow and the Council members are John White, Pat Barrera, Joe Escalera, Kathy Silva, and Mayor Pro Tem Ray Minor. Council members serve a 4 year term. City Council meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 6:00pm at City Hall. The public is always welcome to attend and participate in City Council meetings.

Flying X Coffee

Connell has had a small local coffee shop for the last 3 years, when Ryan Hatch decided to open up Flying X Coffee on the north end of town. Ryan has a passion for specialty coffee and wanted to share that with others in the community. Seeing that there wasn’t a coffee shop in town at the time, he found the building formerly known as “Odoms” and did the upgrades to set it up as a coffee shop. Flying X is the Hatch family cattle brand and Ryan expanded that “brand” to be the name of his coffee business.

In 2015, when the shop opened, Ryan was also farming in Ephrata as well as getting Flying X Coffee up and running. After a flash flood hit the farm and Hatch was unable to get to the farm before he could stop the damage, since he was in Connell at the coffee shop, he decided to pursue his business with coffee full time and his brother would take over the farm. Little changes and improvements went into the shop as all the profits were put back into the shop to expand and grow. Wanting to grow the business and the coffee brand, Ryan started looking for new opportunities in the Tri-City area.

In 2017, Ryan got his first chance to expand when he bought a drive-thru coffee stand at the intersection of Rd 68 and Argent in Pasco. This was just the beginning of expanding the Flying X Coffee brand as then in the spring of 2018 Ryan leased a space in West Richland at 4001 Kennedy Ave and made another sit-in Flying X Coffee shop. This new location includes a drive-thru as well.

Ryan has opened 3 shops in 4 years and although he would love to grow and expand more, he is waiting for the time being until he can absorb the growth. Ryan is proud to serve world class coffee. They use one of the top-rated roasters in the US and brew it on one of the best espresso machines ever made.

All 3 shops employ a total of 10 people, with the Connell shop employing 3. In Connell, you will find Jessica, Mindee, or Annette smiling and happy to serve you a hot or cold coffee drink, as well as smoothies, frappes, Italian soda’s, Red Bull drinks and pastries. The Connell Flying X Coffee shop is located at 257 N. Columbia Ave; open Monday through Friday 7am-5pm and Saturdays 8am – 12pm with abbreviated hours in the summer months. Ryan and his wife, Carrie, who works for NFSD, enjoy living in the Connell and being in this community. The couple is growing their family in addition to business as they are expecting twins this fall. Ryan and Carrie are also devoted WSU Cougar fans.

Tacos la Herradura

Tacos la Herradura also known around the community as “taco truck/wagon or the white taco truck” is owned by Chris and Angela Osimea. They have been in business for 10 years. The first 3 years they were in the taco truck in the parking lot of Lep-Re-Kon Foods. They then rented space at their current location for 3 years before finally buying the current building, formerly a coffee stand, in 2014. Since then, they have added on to it and transformed it into the main facility for Tacos la Herradura. Every year the business has improved and expanded – adding more to the menu, creating a covered outdoor eating area and then later an indoor eating area, all while offering the same good traditional Mexican food to the community.

Tacos la Herradura currently serves a large menu of freshly made authentic Mexican food… tacos, burritos, nachos, chalupa, quesadillas, tortas, tostadas, enchiladas, huarache, and sopas. All the delicious entrees are available with your choice of meat. Chris is usually the face of the business as he takes your order and visits with you, while his wife Angela is in the kitchen preparing and cooking it all. They are the owners and the full time employees. In the future Chris hopes to possibly add another person to help prep food and wrap it but he likes visiting with the community and customers as they come in.

Chris has lived in Connell for 28 years – previously working at grain growers and for Herrman Farms. While his wife has been here for 24 years – previously working at Simplot. They both wanted to “be the boss” and share their culture’s food with those in Connell – there wasn’t a place in town to get really good, authentic, fresh, made to order Mexican food so they bought a taco truck and opened up. The name comes from a restaurant down in Mexico – “Herradura” means horseshoe or lucky. Chris has always wanted to name his business that and when the opportunity came up that’s exactly what he did.

Chris stated, “We love Connell, we love this community, we love what we do. We love the ‘white’ people who love good Mexican food and know they can get it from us!” They strive to offer the best Mexican food in Connell. But most importantly they want to have great service and create honest relationships with their customers and the community. They like to be involved in the community – this year they became Chamber of Commerce members and are looking forward to helping with events as they can. Tacos la Herradura has been hired for private events, parties, and moved to on site locations to serve their food. Just talk to Chris if you are interested in catering services.

Limits Game Farm

Limits Game Farm is owned by Dave Piovesan in Mesa, WA. He and his wife, Pam, decided to open up a game farm in 1999 after a friend of theirs came hunting with his 3 boys and didn’t find any birds after 3 days of hunting. This was because of a steady decline of wild pheasant for about the last 20 years. Believing that Game Farms were the future of hunting and preserving the pheasants, they received their license to open Limits Game Farm from Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife in October of 2000. Their main goal and motivation to starting their business was to create a shooting preserve in an area where one did not exist but yet there was a strong desire and presence for hunting in the area.
Dave remembers coming to the Columbia Basin in the 50’s and 60’s with his dad and hunting outside Eltopia – that was the prime time of pheasant hunting here. When people could hunt and get their daily limits easily. From his personal hunts as a boy to young adult, Dave enjoyed the Columbia Basin and decided to move here in the early 1970’s after graduating from WSU. He worked a couple years in the fertilizer industry before going back to farming full time. He and Pam raised their family here in the basin, with all of their kids graduating from Connell High School.
Limits Game Farm offers half day upland bird hunts September through March by reservation only. One of their prime objectives is to promote youth hunting. That is one of the main reasons they help sponsor the annual Hunter Education Hunt along with Richland Rod & Gun Club and the local Pheasants Forever Chapter. Limits Game Farm also offers reduced rates on hunts for youth (15 and under). Dave can tailor a hunt to that of the hunter and their ability. Dogs are welcome, and it is also an excellent opportunity to train new pups too. If you do not have a dog, then they can arrange for a guide for you. Limits Game Farm has a variety of habitat and terrain where you can work at your own pace and enjoy the hunt.
Dave is always looking for ways to expand the business and provide more unique services with the game farm. He enjoys sharing his passion with others and currently they serve over 400 hunters per year and have plenty of room to offer more hunts to more people. Dave & Pam enjoy their business and living in the area providing a fun and learning environment for all ages of hunters while also promoting the community by sending their customers to Connell for food, lodging and shopping.

Desert Labor

Desert Labor is owned by Jody Barker, a CHS 1988 graduate and local farmer. Desert Labor is an agricultural labor contracting business that opened in 2008. Jody works with area farmers and orchard owners to provide the best much needed temporary farm labor and services.

Desert Labor has 5 full time employees and about 100+ seasonal employees. Many of the laborers are local to the area/community but some come with work visa’s. When asked about expanding Desert Labor Jody stated “Yes, as a business I am always looking into ways to expand. We would love to work with more farmers and orchard owner’s and be able to offer more labor and services to the local agricultural community.” His main motivation for starting Desert Labor came from the shortage of seasonal and year-round labor in the area. Opening a business was a way to bring jobs to the area and add relief to the shortage. Jody also stated that he likes to add to the community, “we provide employment opportunities to the community, keeping good paying jobs local, if anyone is interested have them come by and apply.” You must be 18+ years old to apply. Jody enjoys working hand in hand with farmers and being involved in different aspects of the local agriculture. The idea of Desert Labor came when he was weeding his own field by hand with a few labor helpers and then it grew from an idea and expanded into a business from there. He provides the transportation for his groups to go out to fields/orchards.

In addition to Desert Labor, Jody also owns a separate business, Mid Basin Labor. Mid Basin offers services with H2A – which are seasonal laborers that come from Mexico with work visas. Most are here primarily for the harvesting of orchards and corn harvest during June – November. The H2A project provides housing, transportation and employment. There is currently H2A housing being planned in Connell that will be ready to be utilized for next year’s harvest season. With that, Jody looks forward to bringing more people to the area to shop and be a part of the community if only for a few months of the year. Bringing more commerce to Connell will add to the community and help businesses be successful too.

Jody and his wife Cristi live on a farm outside of Connell. Both grew up in Connell and are still very active within the community with the Chamber of Commerce, Community Club, Fall Festival Group and more. Desert Labor has supported both the Firework Show and Fall Festival for our community for several years.

Desert Labor also provides the services of purchasing tabs for auto, boat, RV, trailers, and recreational vehicles. B & R Aerial Crop Care

B&R Aerial Crop Care, Inc is owned by Chris & Becky Eskildsen. It is located just 1 mile east of Connell at what was once the City municipal Airport and is now privately owned. B&R Aerial Crop Care, Inc., was started in 1977 by Bernie Eskildsen and Richard Griffits, which is how it was named B & R. In the beginning, B&R started out flying off a dirt strip of Feathers Thompson on FishHook-Elgin Rd about 10 miles East of Connell. About 15 years ago, Chris took over the company from his father. Bernie continued to fly for the company as a pilot up until 3 years ago. For a couple years, Chris and Becky’s son, Jase, flew for company. So at one time there were 3 generations of Eskildsen pilots flying for B&R. As Chris’s grandfather also flew but mostly for fun, it can be rightfully claimed that they have had 4 generations of pilots.

Chris is 1 of the 2 full time pilots. In addition, they also have two full time ground crew–one of which is Craig Millage who is a master of all things and is also a certified Airplane Mechanic. Becky does all of the office work.

B&R Crop Care mainly sprays fungicides, insecticides, herbicides and foliar feeds to conventional and organic crops. They also do dry seeding and fertilizing. They fly about a 30 mile radius of Connell but they also have a strip in Mattawa to fly around and land at too. They work from just before sun-up to sundown during their busy season. They can fly and work up to 6 days as week. They don’t fly on Sunday as they want to have one consistent day off for their employees.

One thing that the public doesn’t always realize is that aerial applicators in general, and something B&R Crop Care focuses on specifically, is that pilots are very aware of what and where people, animals and objects are at and around when they are making an application. They are very conscious about wind direction, drift, and the safety of those close by. Pilots will go out of their way to go around if they see people nearby. So, if you see an aerial applicator doing his work, please don’t get close as they are most likely aware of you and will not be able to finish their job.

Connell Community Club

Our Chamber of Commerce includes local clubs and organization in addition to businesses – one of these is the Connell Community Club which was formerly the Lions Club in Connell. The Connell Community Club currently has approximately 25 members that meet monthly at Michael Jays. They have a Board of Directors and officers including: Helen Tobin, President; Carol Lindner, Vice-President; Terry Eagy, Secretary; and Laurie Mandler, Treasurer. These officers and Larry Smith, member-at-large, make up their Governing Board. Members can join throughout the year but the main membership drive/renewal is at the beginning of the year – membership is $10 each or $20 per family.

The Connell Community Club’s primary focus is to offer high school scholarships to graduating seniors each year. In addition to that, though, they have realized other important ways to serve our community as a whole. Several years ago, they assumed the organization of the Connell Winterfest Celebration in December which brings the community together to celebrate the holiday season. Their Chili Fries by the Fireside (Winterfest activity) was a great hit last year and they are expecting it will be even better this year! They also host the Annual First Responders BBQ in the fall – this year will be the 3rd year that they have organized a dinner to support and thank our community volunteers and heroes….a long overdue recognition that has been very well received and provides an opportunity for our community to show their appreciation. This coming year they plan on moving the event to the Community Center to accommodate the ever-growing crowd and is scheduled for Tuesday, September 18th.

In October 2017, the Community Club hosted the first ever “Candidates Meet &Greet”. This type of forum provides an opportunity for community members and political candidates to gather together to share ideas, thoughts, and opinions about the future of our local political issues. The event will take place again this fall on October 2nd at the Connell Community Center.

Community Club members organize various fundraisers to raise money for the scholarships and other community funded projects that come up throughout the year. In previous years, one of the big fundraiser activities has been providing cookies and goodies, coffee, hot chocolate and water, by donation, to travelers at the Rest Area on Highways 26 and 395 on the busy weekends of WSU Dad’s weekend in the fall and Mom’s weekend in the spring. One of the current projects they are lending support to, in conjunction with the Greater Connell Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Connell and Connell Downtown Development, is replacing the current well-used Community Bulletin Board at the Post Office with a new and much larger constructed one that will better serve the growing needs of our community. The group also schedules and advertises for the All City-Wide Yard Sale that takes place each June. They also have cleaned up graffiti in Connell and do other random “Good Neighbor” activities around town.

They are a very active group and have a lot of fun supporting this community.They recently just got Connell Community Club t-shirts that will help identify them as a group at the community functions. They welcome everyone to join in and see for yourselves what a great time they have! Connell Community Club meets the 3rd Thursday of the month at Michael Jays at 6:30pm, or if you want to come for dinner, come and join them at 5:30pm.
